Tsunami Impact Assessment on Vancouver Island’s West Coast

Final project analyzing the impacts of the 20m tsunami expected to hit West Coast Vancouver Island.

Tsunami Impact Assessment on Vancouver Island’s West Coast

For the final project, I worked with Alejandra and Breagha to assess the tsunami impact on Vancouver Island’s West Coast. Vancouver has been anticipating a Megathrust earthquake of 9.0 magnitudes. One of the effects from the earthquake is a 20m tsunami on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Our project analyzes areas within potential flood zones, affected transportation routes and communities, and the affected populations. The goal of this project is to assess the affected factors so that further awareness and mitigation processes can be considered.

Project Management

Alejandra, Breagha, and I have participated in the research, project proposal, data acquisition, mapping, and final report. For organization, we created a group chat for communication and shared documents for the project proposal, final report, and researched informations. We also held meetings during the weeks to complete the mapping portion of the project.

Results

  • The project helped me realize that any population vulnerable to natural disasters are unprepared. There are many unpredicted events that could occur as a result of a natural event. Although we have tried to account for as much possibilities, there are still many unforeseeable events.
  • Transportation methods are one of the greatest concerns because there was only one highway that connects the towns. Even communities that are inland are susceptible to the impacts of the tsunami.
  • During the data acquiring process, the data needed may not exist therefore we would have to use other types of data and methods to present our research.
Here is the final report of our Tsunami Impact Assessment:
